Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: What are Derwent Inktense Blocks used for?

Answer: Derwent Inktense Blocks are versatile tools ideal for watercolor painting, drawing, coloring, and craft projects. These blocks combine the rich pigment of ink with a soft texture, allowing artists to create vibrant, water-soluble art. When activated with water, they transform into ink-like washes, making them perfect for both detailed work and broader strokes.
  • Question: How do you activate Derwent Inktense Blocks?

Answer: To activate Derwent Inktense Blocks, simply use a wet brush to pick up pigment from the block or water directly onto the paper. This interaction releases the vibrant color and allows you to create washes or mix colors seamlessly. This process provides artists with a greater degree of control, enabling splendid textures and color blends.
  • Question: Can Derwent Inktense Blocks be used on different surfaces?

Answer: Yes, Derwent Inktense Blocks can be applied on a variety of surfaces including watercolour paper, canvas, and even board. This versatility allows artists to experiment with different finishes and textures, including mixed media projects where the blocks can complement other materials.
  • Question: Are Derwent Inktense Blocks suitable for beginners?

Answer: Absolutely! Derwent Inktense Blocks are user-friendly and suitable for beginners due to their straightforward application method. Their water-soluble nature allows for forgiving practices; mistakes can easily be blended out with water. Beginners can explore a variety of techniques and improve their skills while enjoying creative freedom.
  • Question: What colors are included in the Derwent Inktense Blocks 12 Set?

Answer: The Derwent Inktense Blocks 12 Set includes a curated selection of vibrant colors such as sun yellow, tangerine, pink, and more. This diversity allows artists to create rich palettes suitable for landscapes, portraits, and abstract art. Each block offers intense, blendable color, providing endless creative possibilities.
  • Question: How do you store Derwent Inktense Blocks?

Answer: To maintain the integrity of Derwent Inktense Blocks, store them in the provided tin or a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This helps keep the blocks in optimal condition and prevents any moisture accumulation, ensuring that they remain usable for a long time.
  • Question: Can I sharpen Derwent Inktense Blocks?

Answer: Yes, Derwent Inktense Blocks can be sharpened to achieve a finer point for detailed work. Using a standard pencil sharpener or craft knife allows artists to create precision edges that are ideal for intricate designs and fine lines.
  • Question: What is the difference between Inktense Blocks and regular watercolors?

Answer: Inktense Blocks differ from traditional watercolors in that they dry permanently once activated with water, while regular watercolors can be reactivated. This permanence allows for vibrant layering and mixed media combinations, making Inktense Blocks ideal for artists who want a more durable finish in their work.
  • Question: Can I use Derwent Inktense Blocks for indoor crafts?

Answer: Yes, Derwent Inktense Blocks are perfect for indoor crafts such as scrapbooking, card making, and home decor projects. Their vibrant colors and easy blending capabilities allow for creative experimentation without worrying about smudging, making them an excellent choice for crafters.

Derwent Inks 2300442 Editorial Review

Derwent Inktense blocks and pencils are a great addition to any artist's collection. The blocks offer a lot more ink than the pencils and can last longer. They can be used like soft chalk and wetted to make them last longer or chipped and used with water to make different colors. The suggestion is to get two boxes, one of pencils for shading and light strokes, and a 70-count box of blocks to get the colors that include essential white. While the blocks have shown great results, it's important to heat set them (use silk and no steam) before usage on cotton or silk. Customers enjoy the vibrant colors and permanent nature of the ink. Some buyers have found the packaging to be inadequate and have seen blocks arriving broken. Despite these minor setbacks, artists who have used both the Derwent Inktense blocks and Prismacolor Nupastels have noted these two are not the same as the Inktense is an ink and more like watercolour pencils or blocks. Derwent Inktense blocks and pencils have shown to be a great choice for art on paper and fabric.
