Product Details
- The visionary science fiction novel that inspired Fritz Lang's landmark 1927 film and defined the architecture of dystopian modernity.First published in 1925, Metropolis presents a towering future city divided with mechanical precision between privilege and labour. Above ground, the sons and daughters of the elite live in gardens and glittering towers; below, workers toil endlessly in the depths, sustaining the vast industrial machine upon which the city depends. When Freder, the idealistic son of the city's master, witnesses the suffering beneath the surface, he begins a journey that challenges the rigid order of his world.Thea von Harbou's novel expands upon the film's visual grandeur with psychological and political depth, exploring class division, technological domination, and the uneasy relationship between power and conscience. Blending prophetic science fiction with mythic symbolism, Metropolis remains a foundational work of early twentieth-century speculative literature-its imagery of machines, masses, and monumental cities continuing to shape the genre's imagination.A work at once romantic and mechanistic, Metropolis stands as a defining text of European dystopian fiction and an enduring meditation on the costs of progress without compassion.Explore other exciting Positronic Books devoted to classic science fiction, fantasy, and mystery.
