Liberty or Death: American Insurrection

**Editorial Review of GMT Games Liberty or Death: American Insurrection** GMT Games’ *Liberty or Death: American Insurrection* offers an intricately designed gaming experience that appeals to strategy enthusiasts, particularly those intrigued by historical military conflicts. This COIN system game demands a significant investment in time and mental effort; hence, it is not recommended for beginners. Players have expressed admiration for the depth of strategic decisions available, while appreciating that the tactical elements of warfare are abstracted—a design choice that allows for a focus on overall strategy against insurgency rather than micromanagement of military units. The game’s mechanics, particularly the card-driven approach, are well-received for adding context and thematic richness. With the ability to play as four distinct factions—each with unique objectives—the replay value is high, as players can explore various strategic paths and outcomes. Its complexity, underscored by a steep learning curve, poses a challenge that many find rewarding once they become accustomed to the rules. The artwork and components are highlighted for their quality, enriching the overall aesthetic experience. However, the game is also described as "brutal" and has drawn mixed feedback regarding its rulebook, which some players find overwhelming and less visually appealing. Despite challenges, the excitement generated by manipulating multiple factions and encountering unexpected events keeps the gameplay engaging. Some criticism arises regarding balance, particularly concerning victory mechanics for specific factions, which could deter certain players looking for a more straightforward experience. Overall, *Liberty or Death* presents an engaging, if challenging, journey into strategic gameplay with a strong historical foundation. It is particularly suited for dedicated gamers who appreciate depth in their board games. **
