The author, Sam Apple, teaches science writing and his writing shines in the book. While the book ostensibly concerns Warburg, a gay Jewish Nobel Prize winner living in Berlin under Hitler, it is about much more than that. Throughout the book, the author helps readers trace the line of scientific inquiry into the causes of cancerous tumors in humans, and how that line diverged, broke up, and came back together. He also sheds light on Warburg, a forgotten Nobel laureate who deserves much more credit than he's received by the general public.
